This is fucking limp. If you want to ‘get experience’ and be able to prove your skills then go on a course, or teach yourself - become good at the main thing you want to do. Volunteer, take classes, ask for help from a friend, buy some software, buy some kit, read books, join forums, read Wikipedia, get into Coursera - whatever it takes for you to know enough about the subject so that you can say ‘I can make a great X, let me show you’.

This is how brofiling actually works in real life. The Week Magazine ran with this image as their cover sketch.

Just so it is said, clearly and unambiguously: the Tsarnaev brothers are white guys. They are white. The FBI’s own wanted poster for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev lists his race as “white”, but you would never know it from the cover image on The Week.

Hold up the cover to someone else, and ask them how many white people they can see on the cover. Chances are they will identify Gabby Giffords on the top left and the image of the Boston policemen (all white men) on the top right, but how about those two guys in the center? Nope, not a chance that anyone would say these caricatures look white.

Why? Because in addition to being white they are also “Muslim”, which is the current dehumanizing “Other” that whiteness has constructed as a sanctioned target for violence in US popular culture.

This is how white privilege works in media representations and everyday life: when the criminal suspects are demonstrably white men, seize upon any aspect of difference and magnify it such that they become Othered, non-white, and menacing. If it is too hard to do so, simply dismiss them as aberrations and isolated cases of insanity. This is also how white culture, specifically the process of whiteness in conjunction with white privilege, portrays several non-white identities, including those that are now considered white but at one time were decidedly not so. For example, see here for how the Irish were depicted as violent apes or lazy drunks in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

If this story is true, Tamerlan Tsarnaev clearly self-identified as a white Muslim. The Week Magazne is active on Tumblr. Maybe they can help explain how this cover happened.

YOU DON’T GET MORE WHITE THAN BEING UPPER MIDDLE CLASS COLLEGE KIDS IN BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS WHO ARE LITERALLY CAUCASIAN AND WHO SELF-IDENTIFY AS “WHITE.”

Earth smothers Fire; Fire burns / melts rock and tree.

Intellect and Emotion duly battle; Air and Water combine to create?

But…

Perhaps instead of being two Elements in opposition, they are two extreme blossoming of the same Element.

Earth goeswith Fire; Air goeswith Water.

This is about recognising the oneness of everything; the Source.

Obvious opposites

Water rarely burns; yet oli does, and fire is fluid and explosions can create H2O.

Emotion + Desire / Will create incredible momentum.

Air is light and inspired, Earth is heavy and stable. Both are creative in their own ways.

Intellect + Generation support creation!

Yet it seems obvious that Water quenches Fire, and Air is above Earth, and so many consider these to be opposite elements.

But…

Again, what if Water and Fire are the manifestations of a single element, the ends of a spectrum of WaterFire? Water goeswith Fire.

What if Air and Earth and the manifestations of the single AirEarth element? Air goeswith Earth.

We see the four manifestations, but only because our perceptions and assumptions often limit us. We compartmentalise reality so that we can manage our mental model of how things work. But it’s only ever a model. We rarely live beyond the veil.

Obvious relations

Just as many people believe in the opposition of elements, many believe in the natural relations bonding Earth and Water, Air and Fire.

Fire needs Air, Air is lifted by Fire. Earth and Water have an intermingled relationship that is both complex and simple.

But…

How about these ‘obvious’ relations help us see that the pairings are showing us the mere manifestations of a greater element. Earth is the extreme end of the EarthAir spectrum.

Earth does not exist without Air.

Let us remember that cold does not exist. Only heat exists, and we measure it via temperature. We cannot and do not measure ‘cold’ for that is only and merely a subjective perception. We measure energy and its absence.
